Jagan to fast as cops foil mom’s
Guntur: The police on Saturday morning broke the fast-unto-death of YSR Congress honorary president Y.S. Vijayalakshmi amid high drama in Guntur city.
However, party president and Kadapa MP Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will take up from where his mother left off from and declared that he would go on an indefinite hunger strike at the Chanchalguda Jail from Sunday.
With Vijayalakshmi’s health deteriorating and her sugar levels falling, the police forcibly shifted her to the GGH for treatment early on Saturday morning, but not without incidents.
YSRC leaders Y.V. Subba Reddy, Sobha Nagi Reddy and Vasireddy Padma tried to stop the police.
In the ensuing melee, an activist fell down from the dais and sustained injuries.
At the hospital, too, Vijayalakshmi rejected treatment in the intensive care unit for a while.
She relented only after Jagan Mohan Reddy called up Subba Reddy and requested him to convince her to accept treatment.
Meanwhile, Rapid Action Force and special forces were rushed to the GGH to control the mob.
After Vijayalakshmi broke her fast, doctors at the GGH administered IV fluids.
Vijayalakshmi had been on the hunger strike in Guntur since August 19 demanding a rollback on the decision to divide the state.
Vijayamma stable
GGH superintendent Dr Challa Mohana Rao said, “Vijayalakshmi’s health is stable, but she is weak. We have referred her to Nims for further treatment. They have agreed to go to Nims.”
YSRC leaders criticised the police for shifting Vijayalakshmi to the GGH in a police jeep and gave a bandh call in Seemandhra districts on Saturday to register their protest. Party leaders also took out rallies in Guntur and activists staged a dharna at the GGH main gate.
For forcibly breaking Vijayalakshmi’s fast and raised slogans against the AICC president Sonia Gandhi. Meanwhile, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s wife Y.S. Bharathi and former minister and YSRC governing council member Konatala Ramakrishna announced on Saturday that he would start his hunger strike from Sunday.
The two, along with other party leaders, met Reddy at the Chanchalguda Jail and deliberated for about an hour. After the meeting Ramakrishna told the media that Jagan Mohan Reddy would undertake the hunger strike without breaking jail rules. He added that the indefinite fast was for the good of the people of the state and to oppose the Congress’ decision to bifurcate the state.
According to sources, former minister Mopidevi Venkataramana might also go on a hunger strike from Sunday in support of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s fast.
Before starting the hunger strike, Jagan Mohan Reddy will write an open letter to the public and also set some demands for the Centre on the bifurcation of the state.
Ramakrishna added that Jagan Mohan Reddy’s sister Sharmila would also undertake a bus yatra the details of which would be announced soon.
