Terming the bank guarantee of Rs 25 lakh that was directed to be furnished by Italian Vessel Enrica Lexie as a “meager amount”, the Kerala high court has directed the deputy conservator of Cochin Port to detain the vessel till Tuesday evening.
The court observed that even the proposed Rs 2-crore compensation amount was meagre.
The court made the observation while considering the appeals filed by Doramma, wife of Valentine, and the two sisters of the other victim.
Counsel for the ship argued that the single bench fixed a reasonable amount of bank guarantee to which the court asked, “Why did you call it reasonable?” Meanwhile, the port moved the court seeking a directive to the coast guard or the police to provide security for the ship berthed at the port.
