It’s official, Left decides not to topple Chandy

Thiruvananthapuram: It’s official. For now, the mainstream Left parties will not topple the democratically elected UDF Government.
The CPM and CPI, at separate meetings, put to rest all speculation on the Left plan to bring down the UDF Government. There were reports on attempts to lure Finance Minister K.M. Mani, offering him the CM post for forming an alternative Government. However, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan dismissed it as “media creation.”
At the CPM secretariat meeting, leaders felt any move to dislodge the Government, which enjoyed majority in the Assembly, would not go down well with the people.
Even though the general mood in the State was against the Government, the party should focus on the agitation for the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy rather than play the toppling game.
Leaders felt that if and when the Government fell on its own contradictions the party could take the appropriate step.
CPI also veered round to the CPM line. Members expressed displeasure over the manner in which leaders, including State secretary Pannyan Raveendran, publicly aired views, hinting at a change of Government and how Mr Mani was more deserving than Mr Chandy to occupy the post.
The meeting cautioned leaders against making politically sensitive statements without consulting the party leaders. The party decided to intensify its agitation against the Government by rallying more people.
The decision had come in the wake of CPM general secretary Prakash Karat’s statement on Monday that there was no change in the party stand in Kerala, which was not to topple the UDF Government.
