Ishrat case: CBI grills Gujarat ex-minister
The CBI on Tuesday questioned former Gujarat minister of state for home Praful Patel in connection with its probe into the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case.
Sources said Mr Patel was questioned by the agency sleuths in Gandhinagar about an alleged meeting held in November 2011 to decide the strategy to obstruct the investigation of the fake encounters of Ishrat Jahan and three others. Ishrat along with three others: Javed Sheikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjadali Akbarali Rana and Jishan Johar were killed in a fake encounter near Ahmedabad on June 15, 2004.
A day after the agency interrogated state law minister Pradeep Singh Jadeja, a close aide of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, in connection with the case, Mr Patel was grilled by the CBI sleuths for several hours. The agency is also considering examining Amit Shah, another close associate of Modi, in connection with the case. Interrogation of several Gujarat ministers in the Ishrat Jahan case is giving sleepless nights to the BJP leaders ahead of the forthcoming Lok sabha elections.
Sources further said, “The former minister was asked specific questions related to the alleged meeting that took place in November 2011 during interrogation”. Suspended IPS officer G.L. Singhal, who was among the nine persons who attended the meeting, had submitted two pen drives to the CBI containing the recorded conversation of the meeting.
