Interpol gets doc arrested for cheating
A Chennai-born doctor, settled in the US, was detained by the immigration authorities following an Interpol alert in connection with a cheating case, on Thursday night.
The doctor had borrowed Rs 60 lakh from his colleague in the US who hails from Hyderabad and left for Chennai without repaying him.
The Interpol alerted the airport authorities by issuing a Red Corner notice following which he was detained at Chennai airport when he was about to board a flight to Dubai en route to the US.
Sources in the airport said Dr Panchapakesan, 59, a resident of Shanti colony at upmarket Anna nagar, in the city, had settled down in the US, working as a doctor.
He had borrowed 1.20 lakh US dollar (Rs 60 lakh) as loan from a fellow doctor, a native of Hyderabad now settled in the US. Since Dr Panchapakesan did not return the money and left for Chennai, the Hyderabad-born doctor preferred a complaint with the US police, which launched a manhunt.
Meanwhile, Dr Panchapakesan returned to India following which the US authorities sought the help of Interpol to arrest him.
The Interpol issued a look-out notice and alerted all airports. When Dr Panchapakesan came to the airport to board an Emirates Airlines flight to Dubai, the immigration authorities found the Interpol to have issued a look-out notice against him and detained him.
He was subsequently arrested. The immigration authorities have informed Interpol about the detention and Dr Panchapakesan would be handed over to CBI officials in Hyderabad for further action.
For his part, Dr Panchapakesan had told the immigration officials that the complaint filed against him was false.
