UP inmates to compete at state level
For the first time in Uttar Pradesh, a state level carom and chess tournament, exclusively for jail inmates, is being held in Lucknow from Wednesday.
About three dozen convicts and under-trials from different jails in the state are being brought to the state capital to enable them to participate in the two-day sporting e
vents that will take place in the Sampurnanand Jail Training Institute. The inmates have qualified for the state level tournament after participating in district and zonal level competitions.
According to Mr V.K. Jain, senior superintendent of model jail, this is for the first time that a state level tournament is being organised for the jail inmates. The winners will also be awarded a state level certificate. “We have taken permission for the event from the concerned authorities and also the courts since this involves moving the jail inmates from one place to another. Inmates from about two dozen jails will be participating in the events. Elaborate security arrangements have been made to prevent any untoward incident,” he said.
