Indians work illegally for US Army in Afghan?
In a shocking revelation, a 30-year-old Keralite has told this newspaper that he had been working in Kandahar, Afghanistan, as a support-staff member for the US Army for four years without a valid visa. On condition of anonymity, he also confessed that he left for Afghanistan from Kochi via Dubai and returned several times on leave without visa documents, but with the aid of emigration officers at the Cochin International Airport .
The confessions indicate that the tainted emigration officers, who are now under the scanner in connection with the human trafficking allegations, had dubious links with the company that used to recruit support staff for the US Army.
“There were tens of thousands of Indians working at danger zones in Afghanistan Army camps under the US Army when the war was at its peak. Most of these people did not possess visa documents as the Indian government had authorised only two companies to recruit men from India. But there were other firms who had the contract from the US Army that used to recruit people at cheaper salaries. First the workers used to leave India from Delhi airport, but later shifted the departure point to Kochi, he said.

Man throws acid at woman for turning him down
Lucknow, Aug. 7: A young woman managed to escape an acid attack by a 50-year-old man who was pressurising her for marriage, the police said here on Wednesday.
Vishnu Narain Shivpuri, a resident of paper mill colony, threw acid on the 24-year-old victim, a native of Dehradun, on Tuesday in Mahanagar area after she refused his marriage proposal, they said.
The victim did not sustain any injury in the incident as she had moved aside to protect herself, the state police said.
The victim told the police that Shivpuri was friend of her late father and was pressurising her for marriage.
