Indian couple jailed in Oslo
Hyderabad couple V. Chandrasekhar and his wife Anupama were convicted by an Oslo district court on Tuesday and sent to jail for 18 months and 15 months respectively for child abuse.
The Norway police had charged the couple with burning their son Sai Sriram’s leg with a hot spoon, hitting him with a belt and utensils several times and threatening to burn him on the tongue.
A copy of the verdict, which is available with this newspaper, states that judge Hege Abrahamsen Gronberg, along with two other lay judges, delivered the judgment after it was proven that Chandras-ekhar, provoked by his wife Anupama in January 2012, had deliberately burnt their son’s leg with a hot spoon.
While agreeing that it might be challenging for the couple’s children if their parents were jailed, the court stated: “However, in view of the nature and seriousness, defendants were given an unconditional prison sentence of certain duration. The court has been informed that the children now live with relatives in India, and it is assumed that they will be taken care of.”
Sources said that the couple can appeal against the verdict at the Borgarting court of appeal.
