IM role: Cops find more clues
There is another conclusive lead now that points towards the involvement of Indian Mujahideen in Wednesday’s Pune serial bombings. Explosive experts from NSG’s elite Bomb Data Centre in their findings have concluded that the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) used in the Pune bombings are “exactly similar to the ones used by the Indian Mujahideen”.
In their findings the explosive experts have stated, “The making of the IEDs in terms of circuit, use of watch as a timer device, using a nine volt battery and ammonium nitrate with shrapnel is a signature configuration of the Indian Mujahideen.”
Importantly, the NSG team is also of the opinion that the circuits of the IEDs was sophisticated but the bombs did not explode at full intensity as the circuits malfunctioned due to high moisture on account of rains in Pune on the day of explosions.
Had it not been raining perhaps the damage would have been much more. But this does not mean that the explosives had not been configured properly. “Like every IED used by the Indian Mujahideen this too was sophisticated but we need to thank the weather for averting a major tragedy,” a senior security official said.
The BDC maintains a huge database at its Manesar headquarters of all explosions in the country. It is here that a detailed analysis of the blasts is done to help identify as to which terror group could be responsible for it since every terror outfit has a “unique technique of assembling the IEDs”.’
“The IM cadre has been trained by the LeT in making of IEDs. Thus, their explosives are very similar in nature to that of the Lashkar. Even in the Pune incident the same has come to light,’’ the official added.
Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing investigations the Maharashtra ATS has sought assistance from Central intelligence agencies to monitor all calls, particularly those made on international numbers, immediately after the blast from around the explosion site. This, sources claimed, was proving to be a tedious exercise as landline numbers too are being scanned.
In addition, certain email accounts on the suspect list of intelligence agencies are also being scanned.
