Ibsa summit in Delhi put off at last moment
The sixth Ibsa (India, Brazil and South Africa) summit, which was to be held in the Capital on June 6, has been postponed owing to “scheduling issues”.
It’s learnt that it is the Brazlians who have expressed their inability to attend the summit at the last minute.
Hectic preparations had been on for the summit with Ibsa being a trilateral, developmental initiative between the three countries who are its members to promote South-South cooperation and exchange.
It’s expected that an announcement of the new dates will take time as the schedules of leaders from all three countries will now have to be taken account of once again.
This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the grouping which was created with the objective to promoting South-South trade in services, goods, investment and energy.
The last Ibsa summit was held in Pretoria in South Africa in October 2011.
Among Ibsa’s objectives are to promote trade and investment opportunities among the three regions of which they are part, promote international poverty alleviation and social development programme as well as the trilateral exchange of information, international best practices, technologies and skills. It also aims to encourage cooperation in a broad range of areas.
