IB warns of flareups in 13 states
Ahead of the crucial meeting of the National Integration Council scheduled for September 23 to discuss the contentious issue of communal riots, the Intelligence Bureau, in a classified report submitted to the Union home ministry and the Cabinet Secretariat on Monday, pointed out that at least 50 districts across 13 states are “highly prone and sensitive to communal riots in the runup to the Lok Sabha elections”.
According to the report, details of which have been accessed by this newspaper, “What makes the situation more vulnerable is that the festive season is round the corner and crucial Assembly elections to four states are due in November followed by the Lok Sabha polls early next year. Thus, from law and order as well security point of view, the next few months are extremely critical.”
“Both political parties as well as terror groups may try to take advantage of the situation for different reasons, like polarisation of votes and spread communal disharmony to destabilise the country respectively,” the report says.
The home ministry had asked the intelligence agency to prepare a comprehensive report on the prevailing communal situation in the country in the runup to the NIC meeting slotted for next Monday. Thus, in its analysis, the IB has pointed out the potential vulnerable areas and states that could witness a communal backlash.
