Human chain to save Jijabai zoo: Sena
The Shiv Sena is opposing the proposal to shift the Veermata Jijabai Bhonsale Garden and Zoo, popularly known as Ranichi Bagh, from its current location. The zoo is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji’s mother.
The Maharashtra Tour-ism Development Corpor-ation (MTDC) had proposed the plan to shift the zoo to either Aarey Colony in Goregaon or to Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in Borivali. The plan was prepared by MTDC’s special committee, which had appointed a consultant, M/s Fortress Infrastructure Advisory Services, for assessment and preparation of a detailed report for the development of various tourism projects in Mumbai.
Shiv Sena leader Ajay Chaudhary said, “It’s yet another attempt at land-grab by the government and MTDC. MTDC has become a loss-making proposition and now they are finding ways to make quick bucks. By moving the zoo they will usurp the land and it will be ultimately sold to some builder at an astronomical price. Under no circumstance will the Shiv Sena allow this.”
To protest against the proposal, Mr Chaudhary said a human chain would be formed around Ranichi Bagh on Monday evening. Approximately 10,000 people are likely to come together to form the chain, including school students, NGOs and animal activists. The chain will be formed along the zoo boundary in Byculla. However, the BMC has opposed the suggestion to shift the zoo.
