House panel to discuss land bill
The parliamentary standing committee on rural development headed by senior BJP leader Sumitra Mahajan will take up for the first time in its meeting on Friday the Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill (LARR) 2011.
Sources said that the LARR Bill, 2011, is very much likely to be deliberated in the meeting on Friday, with members likely to express their views on it. The minister of rural development (MoRD) Jairam Ramesh had met Ms Mahajan the very next day after tabling the LARR Bill, 2011 in the Parliament in the fag end of the Monsoon Session. Sources said that the minister has met most of the members of the standing committee in a bid to enlist their support for the legislative proposal.
Mr Ramesh had told reporters that the bill could be passed in the Winter Session of the Parliament.
Sources said that the rural development ministry is open to take up any suggestion from the standing committee and incorporate them in the bill before it is passed by the Parliament.
Mr Ramesh claims to have got the support of most of the leaders of major political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party and Trinamul Congress. However, the BSP has not yet indicated what stand the party would take, as Mr Ramesh had said earlier that the Congress could bank on the Land Bill in the party campaign for the 2012 UP Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, the rural development ministry is likely to launch a new updated website on Friday incorporating all recent measures and legislative details.
