House mulls statute amendment
The government assured the Lok Sabha on Wednesday that it will consider bringing in a constitutional amendment to annul a Supreme Court order against reservations for the faculty in the super-speciality section of the prestigious AIIMS (All-India Institute of Medical Sciences).
Law minister Kapil Sibal also told the House that the government will be filing a review petition on the order in the SC on Monday seeking revocation of the order on reservations for faculty in the super-speciality stream.
The government’s assurance came following vociferous demands by MPs cutting across party lines who demanded a constitutional amendment in the light of the SC order.
The discussion on the SC order was taken up by the LS shortly after 11 am with Speaker Meira Kumar deciding to set aside the agenda for it. Later, as the uproar over the SC order continued, Ms Kumar herself remarked: “The whole House is very agitated over this issue and my suggestion to the government side is that it should think of a constitutional amendment.” Earlier, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj said the Supreme Court had given a verdict on an issue which was not before it. Referring to the all-party meeting held Tuesday, Ms Swaraj said the government had maintained that it will go for a review petition and if that did not lead to revocation of the order it will bring a constitutional amendment.
