House adjourned for 10th day
With both the government and the Opposition sticking to their guns, Parliament had to be adjourned on Thursday for the 10th consecutive day without transacting any business. The Samajwadi Party members earlier staged a sit-in dharna before Mahatma Gandhi’s statue demanding a joint parliamentary probe (JPC) into the 2G
spectrum allocation scam. The treasury benches too in order to match their counter-parts in the Opposition waved placards denouncing the Karnataka chief minister, Mr Yeddyurappa.
In the Lok Sabha, Opposition members trooped into the well of the House, the moment the House assembled and started to shout slogans demanding a JPC probe into the 2G scam. In retaliation, the Congress members began to wave placards seeking the removal of Mr Yeddyurappa from the Karnataka chief minister’s post.
“Corruption, anarchy, mining mafia wins in Karnataka” and “Corrupt CM wins, Karnataka loses” read some of the placards. One Congress member had a placard that demanded the resignation of Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik over the Vedanta mining project. As pandemonium prevailed, the Speaker, Ms Meira Kumar, adjourned the House till noon. Similar scenes were repeated when the House reassembled after an hour, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House for the day.
Prior to it the Samajwadi party members staged a sit-in dharna in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue within the precincts of parliament and shouted slogans demanding a joint parliamentary probe into the 2G spectrum scam before proceeding to the house. Slogans such as “Kendra sarkar hosh mein aao, JPC banao” rent the air.
