Honesty never pays in UP
Dishonest officers in Uttar Pradesh have never rankled the government and the political bosses but honest officers always have.
Durga Shakti Nagpal, whose suspension has caused a nationwide furore, is not the first officer to have paid the price for being honest.
Another young IAS officer who has been “punished” for being straightforward and honest is Shubhra Saxena, a 2008 batch officer. Shubhra, an IT wizard before she joined the civil services, was posted as district magistrate in Rampur but could not last beyond a few months because she did not pander to the whims of senior minister Mohammed Azam Khan.
In the previous Mayawati regime, senior IAS officer Rohit Nandan — now CMD Air India — was removed from the chief minister’s secretariat because he refused to allow under-table deals and manoeuvre files to suit BSP interests.
Another upright officer who paid for his honesty was Sanjay Bhoosreddy. He was given a punishment posting for almost four years because he refused to give buses for a BSP rally. More recently, IPS officer Navneet Rana was removed from his post as SSP Gonda because he dared to conduct a sting operation on K.C. Pandey, a Samajwadi leader, who was allegedly involved in cattle smuggling. Rana conducted a sting operation and caught Pandey offering him a bribe on telephone.
Rana was shifted out while K.C. Pandey was “rewarded” with a ministerial position. Dr S.P. Singh, posted as chief medical officer in Gonda, had a similar experience.
He was reportedly abducted by UP Minister Vinod Singh who wanted him to incorporate the names of his supporters in the list of ad hoc doctors.
