Heatwave worsens across north India, claims 2 lives

Gruelling heat tightened its grip over most parts of North India on Monday killing two persons in Rajasthan as the mercury rose further at many places in the region with Sriganganagar in the desert state being the hottest at 48.7 degrees.

Both the casualties, that of a rag picker and a sweeper, occurred in Jaipur which sizzled at 45 degree C, six degrees above normal.
Pilani with a maximum of 47.5 degrees C was the second hottest place in the desert state where no let-up in heat is expected in the next 24 hours, the Met office said.
Delhi continued to reel under a combination of simmering heat and high humidity, recording a maximum of 44.1 degrees Celsius which though marginally lower than Sunday’s 44.8, was still five notches above the normal for this time of the season. Churu, Bikaner, Kota, and Barmer in Rajasthan recorded a maximum of 47.2, 46.6, 45.9, and 44.5 degrees respectively while Jaisalmer and Ajmer recorded day temperature of 44.2 and 43.4 degrees respectively.
Punjab and Haryana also sizzled with Hisar continuing to be the hottest place in the region as it recorded a maximum of 47.8 degrees C, two notches higher than Sunday’s temperature 47.6 degrees.
Ambala and Karnal in Haryana also braved a hot day recording a maximum of 42 and 40.4 degrees Celsius while Chandigarh stood at 41.5 degrees C, four degrees above normal. In Punjab, blistering heat swept Amritsar at 43.8 degrees C, up by four degrees while Ludhiana was equally hot at 43.4 degree C, four degrees above normal.
Scorching heat prevailed in Patiala as well, with the maximum there settling at 42.1 degrees C, four notches above normal.
The Met office has forecast mainly sunny weather in the region on Tuesday. Uttar Pradesh was no exception as it continued to reel under hot and sultry weather conditions in the absence of rain with Agra being the hottest recording a maximum of 46.6 degrees Celsius followed by Jhansi at 46.2 degrees C.
However, neighbouring Uttarakhand was lashed by storms and rains which uprooted trees at various places killing a woman in Dehradun. —PTI
