HC reserves order on UP caste-based quota
The Allahabad high court on Monday reserved its order on the controversial reservation policy introduced recently in UP in which caste-based quotas were introduced at the preliminary stage itself. The court asked the state Public Service Commis-sion not to conduct interviews for the ongoing civil services examinations for the next 10 days.
The three-tier reservation system introduced by UP Public Service Commission, which proposes caste-based quotas from the preliminary exams stage itself, has drawn flak from students and several political parties and also led to violent protests last week.
A division bench of Justices Laxmi Kant Mohapatra and Rakesh Srivastava reserved their judgment on a bunch of petitions filed by hundreds of students appearing in competitive examinations, who had challenged the controversial reservation policy.
Subsequently, the interviews which were to commence on July 26 would now be rescheduled and by that time the verdict on the matter is also likely to be delivered.
Appearing on behalf of the petitioners, senior advocates, including Kesri Nath Tripathi and Ravi Kiran Jain, argued that the new reservation policy was “illegal and unconstitutional” and intended to benefit candidates from “only one caste group considered close to the ruling party in the state”.
Meanwhile, violent protests continued in Allahabad for the third consecutive day on Monday and students representing pro and anti-reservation lobbies clashed with each other.
Massive security arran-gements have been made in Allahabad that has been rocked by violence since the past few days.
