HC questions police probe in Lakhimpur case
The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Monday said that it was not satisfied with the police investigations in the alleged rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in a police station in Lakhimpur district and sought more details on the case from the state government by July 8.
The division bench of the court, while hearing a petition seeking a CBI probe into the alleged rape and murder, made this observation.
The police report submitted before the court blamed constable Atiq Ahmad for the minor girl’s death. It, however, ruled out that the girl was raped — an allegation made by the victim’s family which is demanding a CBI inquiry into the case.
“As the court was not satisfied with the police report, it asked the state government why the case should not be handed over to the CBI. The court has fixed July 8 as the next date of hearing. The court questioned the difference in two post mortem reports and raised doubts about the impartiality of police investigations,” said Prince Lenin, counsel for an NGO which moved the petition seeking a CBI probe into the case. The body of the 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree June 10 inside the Nighasan police station premises in Lakhimpur. The death was initially dismissed by police as suicide.
