HC judges may retire at 65 now
In a bid to bring them on par with Supreme Court Judges, the government is considering increasing retirement age of high court judges from 62 to 65 years. A proposal to this effect is high on the agenda of the Union Cabinet, which will meet on Friday.
Confirming this sources in the government said, “Law ministry has prepared a Constitution Amendment Bill, which aims to step up the retirement age of high court judges from present 62 years to 65 years. The bill is listed for the Friday meeting of the Union Cabinet for its consideration, which will will be chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.”
The UPA had also attempted to increase the retirement age of Supreme Court judges to 68 along with stepping up the retirement age for high court judges, but the move did not get Opposition’s nod.
Last time the objection was against increasing apex court judges’ retirement age to 68 years.
But the government in its present move feels confidant that since the current proposal is to increase retirement age of only the high court judges, the bill will sail through the parliamentary test.
The proposed amendment bill requires support of two-third of both the Houses of Parliament to become a law.
