Haryana honour killing: 2 arrested
In a gruesome reminder of medieval brutalities still prevalent in the hinterland of Haryana, another lovelorn couple was brutally killed in the name of honour in Garnavati village of Rohatak district.
Thirty-year-old Dharmender and 23-year-old Nidhi were barbarically killed allegedly by the girl’s family after they tried to elope.
The girl was publicly killed and cremated whereas the boy was first thrashed, his arms and legs broken, and then beheaded, after which his body was left outside his house.
Both boy and the girl belonged to the jat community and were resident of the same village.
The Haryana police on Thursday has arrested the father and uncle of the girl who was lynched in public view for eloping with Dharmender.
According to the police, Nidhi’s family tried to cremate her in a hush-hush manner, but the police managed to reach the spot and took the half-burnt body in its custody for post-mortem. The police said that couple were killed after they were brought back to the village. The boy and girl were studying in Rohtak and were in love. They decided to elope as their marriage was not possible in the village.
The police says that the couple was contacted by the girl’s relatives who assured her that they would not be harmed when they would return to the village. However, the couple was killed as soon as they came back to the village.
Reacting to the incident, National Commission for Women chairperson Mamta Sharma said that all those who are involved in the horrific incident must be arrested. Khap panchayats have no constitutional right and the government must act, added Ms Sharma.

Is it PM’s gift to US firms, asks BJP
AGE CORRESPONDENT
New Delhi, Sept. 19
Amidst reports suggesting that an agreement will be signed between India and the US which may not be in tune with crucial clauses in the Nuclear Liability Act, the BJP on Thursday alleged that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh wants to “gift” this to American companies during his forthcoming visit to the US.
The party criticised the opinion of the Attorney-General to the Department of Atomic Energy that it is for the operator of a nuclear plant in India to decide whether it wished to exercise the “right of recourse” provided under Section 17 of the act.
The party insisted that a decision on the issue should be taken after due diligence and no step should be taken that imperils the safety of Indians or compromises the nation’s security. “The reported media observation that government is trying to compromise the importance of Section 17 (b) of the Nuclear Liability Act passed by Parliament is very worrisome and a cause of serious concern,” deputy leader of BJP in the Rajya Sabha Ravishankar Prasad said.
