Keoladeo Park To Receive Water From Chambal
NARAYAN BARETH
JAIPUR, JUNE 17

There is good news for the winged visitors and wildlife lovers at Keoladeo National Park (KNP) in Bharatpur. The park will receive water from Chambal river through a drinking water project. “Three mcft water will be provided to the KNP every day,” said a senior officer. According to the officials, 350 mcft water will be made available for the KNP till the month of August.
“This is the month of June, but even then 25 to 30 migratory birds can be seen at the KNP,” wildlife officer said. Listed as a world heritage site, the KNP attracts 364 species of birds, including many from India, but also from countries like Afghanistan, Siberia, China. The KNP has been experiencing shortage of water for past several yeas causing concern among bird enthusiasts. Bharatpur district magistrate Gourav Goyal said the administration will ensure availability of water for the KNP.
The bird sanctuary draws a large number of visitors not only from India, but also from abroad. Every year over one lakh tourists visit the park. “This is also not the tourist season, but only last month over 4,000 tourists visited the park,” an officer said.
According to the administration, the work on Govardhan Drain project is under way and would be completed this year. “When the Govardhan drain project gets completed, water will be used from the drain to fill the lakes at the KNP,” an officer said. The KNP requires more than 600 mcft water. The administration also pinned hope on water stored in Panchana Dam under the neighbouring Karauli district but two years back the farmers opposed it and started protesting in big way.
