Grades 1st time, girls continue good show
For the first time in the history of board examinations, the students could not figure out “how much exactly they had scored” with the Central Board of Secondary Education announcing the grading-based results for Class 10 on Friday. And not many seemed to mind that. A large number of them were relieved as there were neither any toppers, nor any failures. Meanwhile, the old story of girls outshining boys continued.
The shift from marks to grade became evident when the controller of examinations, M.C. Sharma, announced that out of 9,02,747 candidates, 89.28 per cent “became eligible for the qualifying certificate” as compared to the 88.84 per cent in 2009. There was no mention of the “pass percentage”. While 90.68 per cent of girls became eligible for the qualifying certificate, for boys the figure was 88.3 per cent. For the remaining 9.32 per cent girls and 11.7 per cent of the boys, it was not the end of the road. They will not be declared “failed” and will be allowed five more chances to qualify for the “eligibility certificate”.
Under the new grading system, the CBSE has introduced a nine-point scale — A1(91-100 marks), A2(81-90), B1(71-80), B2(61-70), C1(51-60), C2(41-50), D(33-40), E1(21-32) and E2 (20 and below). Those students who obtain the qualifying grades D and above in all subjects will be awarded qualifying certificate. The board will award merit certificates to the candidates who obtain grade A1 in all the five subjects.
Also, those students who secure grade D and above in all subjects, excluding additional subjects, will be eligible for admission into Class 11.
Those who secure E1 and E2 grades will get five chances for improving their performance.
In the region-wise performance, Chennai did much better over the other regions with 96.18 per cent students becoming eligible for qualifying certificates. It was followed by Ajmer where 93.51 per cent students became eligible for qualifying certificates. In Delhi, 89.04 per cent students became eligible for it.
The Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, Kendriya Vidyalayas and government schools continued to outperform other schools.
