Govt may put Telangana formation on fast-track
The UPA government is expected to expedite the process of Telangana formation once the Monsoon Session of Parliament comes to an end. The proposed move is to send a clear signal that the Congress is committed to the creation of Telangana. Once it is formed, Telangana would become the 29th state in India.
Sources in the government said Union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is all set to take a note to the Cabinet soon, following which a group of ministers (GoM) would be formed to go into the issues arising out of the decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh.
Recently, Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had said that a committee would be set up on Telangana.
Congress general secretary in-charge Digvijay Singh too has said, “At the moment the idea is to have 10 districts in Telangana but it will be for the GoM to consider demands for inclusion of more areas.” The CWC too in its resolution on July 30 had called upon the Centre to “make steps in accordance with the Constitution to form a separate state of Telangana ... Within a definite timeframe.” The CWC also favoured making Hyderabad the joint capital of the two states for a period of 10 years.
The Monsoon Session is a witness to a series of protests by Seemanadhra MPs both within and outside the Houses. The suspension of 12 MPs belonging to the Congress and the TDP had allowed the Lower House to transact some business and notably pass the Food bill. But the return of the members after the suspension period has only led to the Telangana issue causing so much of turmoil in the Lok Sabha.
