Gogoi son makes foray into politics
In what was almost visible since last few weeks, Gaurav Gogoi, son of Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, on Friday took a formal plunge into politics by making his presence felt at Nagaon while predicting victory of the Congress led by his father in the Assam Assembly polls.
He started his journey in politics by joining a “show of strength” by forest minister Rockybul Hussain who, on Friday, filed his nomination for Samaguri Assembly seat at Nagaon. Standing between the two most trusted ministers of his father — Rockybul Hussain and Himanta Biswa Sarma — Gaurav said he was there to express his solidarity with Mr Hussain. Mr Hussain is set to face biggest challenge of his political career as the regional AGP has pitted heavyweight former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta against him. Gaurav, chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s only son, who is back home after completing his Masters in public administration from New York University, was maintaining distance from politics so far. But, since the last few weeks, his presence at CM’s press conferences has led to speculation of him joining politics.
The 28-year-old, who wants to know his state and people better, is soon going to be a known face in the state’s politics as his father has planned an extensive tour for him in the run-up to the Assembly elections. In a recent informal chat with media persons, the chief minister had said that his son will travel far and wide with other Congress leaders.
