Gloom descends on Paris Metro hero’s village
A Sikh youth from Punjab was killed while saving a French girl from thieves in the Paris Metro, an incident which saw the French media and the people hailing him as a hero.
Rajinder Singh, alias Babbu (27), a native of Dumana village here, went to Paris to earn a livelihood about seven years ago and was working in a restaurant in Balini city, family members said.
On October 2, when Singh was returning home after duty he noticed a man trying to snatch a purse from a woman on a metro train.
Singh tried to intervene but was beaten up and pushed off the moving train by the man and his three accomplices.
He fell on the tracks and was rushed to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to injuries the same day.
Gloom descended on the family and the village when the news of Singh’s death poured in here.

1 arrested for duping public of over `80 lakhs
Coimbatore, Oct. 9: A man was arrested on Sunday on charges of cheating over 500 people to the total tune of `80 lakhs by collecting money on the promise of providing candle-making units for their livelihood.
Suresh Babu was arrested on a complaint from one Dhandapani that the former had taken `10,000 from him by promising to give candle-making machine and mould and after that there was no trace of him.
Based on this, Babu was arrested and interrogation revealed that he had cheated over 500 persons in similar manner, the police said.
Since then, around 160 complaints had been received against Babu, the police said. — PTI
