French paedophile held in Chennai

A French national, convicted in his country for raping girls in an orphanage, has been arrested here, police said today.

A CB-CID team arrested Eric Martin (53), who was hiding in the city by changing his name to Fernandez, from Madhavaram near here yesterday, they said.

He was sentenced in 2000 to 15 years' imprisonment on charges of rape but escaped from custody and illegally entered India through Nepal several years ago.

Interpol had issued a 'red-corner' notice against him. He was produced before a Judicial Magistrate and later lodged in Puzhal prison, police said, adding, he would be soon be handed over to the Interpol.
