French diplomat accused of raping daughter arrested
The French diplomat, Pascal Mazurier, accused of raping his three-and-a-half-year-old daughter was arrested on Tuesday morning in Bengaluru.
The arrest took place after the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed that Mazurier did not enjoy any diplomatic immunity. This move made the Bengaluru police act and arrest the accused.
The French official has been taken for a medical check up. He will be produced in the court later in the day.
Following a complaint by his wife Suja Jones, the local police had registered a case of rape against the diplomat, a deputy head of chancery in the French consulate in Bengaluru under Section 376 of the IPC on Thursday.
The police were trying to arrest him since then, but the legal hazards denied them from it. Both the French and Indian governments had clarified that the French diplomat carries a service, not a diplomatic passport, after the French government formally indicated it will allow Mazurier to face prosecution here.
The French national could not be reached on Monday as he has remained holed up within the French consulate general which falls under the diplomatic zone.
The Bengaluru police, on Monday said that they had not received any word from the Union ministry.
