Food security ordinance deferred by the Union Cabinet

Speaking to newspersons after a prolonged Cabinet meeting, Finance Minister P Chidambaram said both the versions – the Bill and the Ordinance – are ready, but the government has decided to give it one more effort by introducing the bill in a special session of Parliament, if the Opposition supports the move.
Union Ministers Kamalnath and Susheel Kumar Shinde are likely to meet Opposition leaders with a request for a special session of Parliament beforeJuly 17.
The government wants a special session of Parliament and if the proceedings are disrupted, an ordinance would be brought in.
The government is also keen for a special session as the President’s rule in Jharkhand will have to be extended before July 17.
