Five youths killed in road accident
Bengaluru: Five youths from the city died on the spot on Saturday, when a BMTC bus mowed their car down on Kanakapura road in Thalagattapura police limits. Moments before this, the speeding car had lost control and hit a tree.
The incident occurred near APS Engineering College near Somanahalli Gate. The victims have been identified as Yasir Khan, Yarab, Ayub, Zunaid, and Mayur, all aged between 22 and 25 years and residents of Neelasandra.
Police said a car, bearing the registration number KA 03 ML 9825, was returning towards Bengaluru from Kanakapura, and the bus (KA 11 F 1241) was bound for Kenchanapura.
The accident occurred around 4.30 pm at a turning near the KEB office at Somanahalli Gate. Eyewitnesses said the car driver was speeding and lost control while negotiating a curve, causing it to swerve to the right and hit a tree on the side.
The driver of the bus, coming from the opposite direction, could not control the vehicle and rammed into the car which came under the wheels of the bus.
The Thalagattapura police rushed to the spot and tried to extricate the mangled bodies from the crushed car. They were helped by local residents.
The bodies were sent to the mortuary of Rajarajeshwari hospital. Fearing a public backlash, the bus driver abandoned his vehicle and fled.
Recalling the accident, Krishna, an eyewitness, said it appeared the five youths were part of a larger group of 20. He believed the driver of the allegedly speeding car was to blame for the mishap.
Meanwhile, Harohalli circle inspector Ramachandrappa said, “The exact cause of the accident is still not clear. The postmortem report will determine whether or not the driver of the car was inebriated. The victims’ families have been intimated.”
