Five leaders’ future depends on Phase 5
Five leaders in four different parties will be taking a crucial examination on Wednesday when the fifth phase of polling takes place in Uttar Pradesh.
For these leaders who also hold key party posts, the elections will not only decide their stature in the party organisation but also the responsibilities they may be asked to shoulder in the post-poll scenario.
Congress general secretary Janardhan Dwiwedi belongs to Chitrakoot district in Bundelkhand and it is widely believed that he played a key role in first bringing Mr Rahul Gandhi to the region to see the prevailing state of affair. Mr Dwiwedi is also believed to have been instrumental in getting the Bundelkhand package and in distribution of tickets in the region. He also accompanied Mr Gandhi during the meetings in Bundelkhand.
If the Congress manages to taste success in Bundelkhand, Mr Dwiwedi’s mission will be accomplished and his status within the Congress can be expected to be suitably enhanced. For senior BSP minister and party general secretary Naseemuddin Siddiqui these elections are a make-or-break exercise. Mr Siddiqui faces the tough challenge of ensuring the BSP’s success in Bundelkhand by overcoming the anti-incumbency factor and warding off the anti-BSP campaign unleashed by his former colleague Babu Singh Kushwaha against the party.
“Siddiqui will definitely lose his clout in the BSP if he allows the party to succumb to Kushwaha’s attacks. BJP’s gain in the region will never be tolerated by Mayawati because her prestige is now directly linked to the party’s performance in Bundelkhand and Naseemuddin Siddiqui is in charge of protecting Bundelkhand for the BSP,” said a senior BSP functionary.
