Ex-minister convicted in graft case surrenders
Kochi: Former state power minister and Kerala Congress (B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai, sentenced for one year imprisonment by the Supreme Court in a corruption case, today surrendered in the special court here that tried the 20-year-old case.
Pillai, accompanied by his son actor-turned-politician Ganesh Kumar and followers, turned up before the court responding to the to its order that either he surrender on his own or the police execute the order.
The court gave issued the order two days back while rejecting the petition filed by Pillai seeking time for the execution of the arrest warrant on health grounds.
Th Supreme Court sentenced Pillai and two others for one year rigerous imprisonment on February 10, reversing the high court acquittal of them.
The prosecurtion case was that they conspired in awarding the contract for construction of tunnel and surge shaft of the Edmalayar Hydro Eelectric Project in 1980s, causing the state exchequer a loss of Rs 2 crore.
