Ex-minister charged with rape
Former food and civil supplies minister Hartalu Halappa has been charged for raping the wife of his friend. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which was probing the rape and other criminal charges against Mr Halappa, on Wednesday filed the chargesheet against him under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
The CID has, however, not found evidence to prove other charges — of criminal intimidation and wrongful confinement and restraint — against the former minister.
The woman had filed a complaint against Mr Halappa, a “family friend” and three-time BJP MLA from Sorab in Shimoga district, in May last year in Shimoga for allegedly raping her in November 2009 during one of his visits to their house in Shimoga. The case was later transferred to the CID.
She had approached the State Human Rights Commission for handing over the case to the CBI for an “impartial” probe.
