Etiquette lessons for Haryana policemen
In the near future, you can expect that stick-yielding Haryana police, which till now is not really known for its people-friendly image, to greet people with a polite hello, when they visit the police station with their problem or meet a Haryana cop anywhere else.
In an attempt to change its image of harsh and impolite police force, the state government is chalking out a plan to develop the soft skills of its formidable police force. The purpose of the programme is to weed out the fear of the police amongst the citizens during their interface with the police.
The government wants to change the colonial image of the police where its is only dreaded by the citizens and at best avoided.
The senior officials of the Haryana police and state home department are already busy in developing the modalities of the programme under which the soft-skills are developed.
According to Haryana home secretary Samir Mathur, “The main emphasis would be on improving the body language of the cops and also about improving the tonal qualities. The focus would be on telephonic conversation with the citizens also environment given to the citizens in the police stations when they come with their problems.
”We know that this not an easy task as it is not easy to change the attitude of a hardened cop in a day, but this is our effort to make the police more people friendly. The exact details of the programme would be chalked out in a weeks time, he added.
The government is planing to hire a HR agencies or any other institutes like mass communication institutes to impart the soft skills to the cops. The training would be provided to the police officials up to the rank of deputy superintendent of police. DSP who has to deal with the public on day to day basis.
