DMRC to take up Kochi metro
Kochi: Stage is set for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to take up the project work of Kochi Metro.
A final decision on this has been taken jointly by the central urban development ministry, the Delhi government and the DMRC after pressure from the Kerala government and the Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL).
Central urban development minister Kamal Nath will formally announce the decision in Kochi on Tuesday.
Sources said central urban development secretary Sudhir Krishna has finalised the terms of engagement for the DMRC in the Kochi Metro project after DMRC MD Mangu Singh agreed that DMRC could take up the Kochi project without it affecting the metro works in Delhi.
Besides having the major role to execute the project work, the DMRC would also have the responsibility to invite tenders for the Kochi Metro. DMRC can take a decision on what role could be given to Metro Man E. Sreedharan in the Kochi project. Sreedharan would also attend a crucial meeting in Kochi on Tuesday where Kamal Nath would make the formal announcement on DMRC’s role in the Kochi project.
Sources said Sreedharan, currently principal adviser to DMRC, is most likely to hold the same post in Kochi Metro as well. Meanwhile, Kochi Metro’s technical sub-committee, which met here on Friday, decided that Kochi Metro can increase the number of bogies from the existing three to six in future, if necessary.
