DMK rallies behind Kanimozhi
DMK president and chief minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday got his party’s backing for daughter Kanimozhi in her battle against the CBI case accusing her of involvement in the 2G spectrum scam, arguing that saving her meant saving the DMK from conspirators out to sully its image.
“This is not an attempt by me to save my daughter. Protecting Kanimozhi is important to ensure that the DMK’s image is not tarnished,” he told the 30-member high-level meeting at the party headquarters. The gathering of DMK seniors then resolved to effectively fight the CBI case in legal forums while taking note of an emotional statement made by Ms Kanimozhi that the party should not compromise itself trying to protect her and that she could handle the challenge herself. “Treat me just as a foot soldier in the party and not the leader’s daughter,” she pleaded. Earlier, on Wednesday morning, Mr Karunanidhi drove from his residence to the CIT Colony bungalow to pick up Ms Kanimozhi for the crucial party session. She was hesitant to attend the meeting as it was summoned to discuss the CBI case against her and she did not want to embarrass the leaders by her presence; but her father insisted that her participation would not be inappropriate.
