District chiefs defy diktat, want tickets
Though the Rajasthan BJP asked all its the district presidents not to contest Assembly elections and to help the party nominees win, more than half the 39 district unit heads have not paid any heed.
The party sources said half of them have been vying for tickets.
The sources said not only district presidents, but all the six presidents of the BJP’s frontal organisations are working overtime to manage a ticket.
“It may affects the party’s poll strategy because the district unit presidents and other such office-bearers are supposed to dedicate themselves to ensure the victory of candidates,” said a party functionary.
The BJP leadership has been contemplating seriously to remove such officer-bearers from their present responsibilities if they remain in the race for tickets.
Party in-charge for the state Kaptan Singh Solanki categorically told the office-bearers at a meeting in Mount Abu last month that they will not contest elections.
State BJP president Vasundhara Raje also expressed the same view while leading her Suraj Yatra.
“Twenty out of 39 presidents and six presidents of frontal organisations like Mahila Morcha and Kisan Morcha have been insisting that they be allowed to contest the elections,” said a saffron leader.
“If such party officials fight the election, they will not be able to form a strategy in their respective areas to help the party candidates,” said a party leader.
Sources said most of them were appointed when RSS-backed Arun Chaturvedi headed the state unit as president and they have the Sangh Parivar’s backing.
