Digvijay demands Chouhan's resignation

Congress general secretary, Digvijay Singh on Tuesday demanded the resignation of the Madhya Pradesh chief minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan as he had failed to contain the farmers agitation going on in the city.

The Congress general secretary told reporters at his residence that it was not he, but farmers belonging to an organisation run by the BJP, who were alleging that Mr Chouhan was in the habit of telling lies.

"Because of the farmers agitation, normal life in Bhopal was paralysed and the chief minister is unable to do anything about it," Digvijay said.

He said that he was chief minister of Madhya Pradesh for 10 long years and during this period, no such agitation by farmers had taken place in the state, he said.

The Congress general secretary said that during the last seven years of BJP rule in Madhya Pradesh, there has been blackmarketing of fertilisers and farmers were forced to undergo a number of hardships.

"If Chouhan was really honest, he would initiate action against those indulging in blackmarketing of fertilisers," he said.

A large number of farmers on Monday 'gheraoed' Mr Chouhan's residence in support of their various demands including 12-hour power supply to rural areas.

The agitation was a sort of drama being enacted between the state government and the farmers and demanded that this should come to an end soon, Digvijay added.
