Delhi is crime capital of India
Delhi tops the list of 35 major cities in the country reporting the highest number of rape cases in 2010 followed by Mumbai, Pune, Jabalpur, Bhopal and Jaipur. As many as 414 rape cases were reported in the national capital in 2010 while Mumbai recorded 194 such incidents and Pune recorded 91 incidents. The
statistics released by the National Crime Records Bureau in its latest report, Crime in India 2010, says that 23 per cent of rape cases in these urban areas took place in Delhi and 10.8 per cent in Mumbai.
IT city Bengaluru recorded 65 incidents of rape while Varanasi recorded two incidents, the least number of such incidents among 35 cities.
Among the states, Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of rape at 3,135 followed by West Bengal (2,311), Assam (1721), Maharashtra (1599), Rajasthan (1571), Uttar Pradesh (1563) and Andhra Pradesh (1362).
Further, a total of 22,24,831 IPC crimes were reported in the country during the year 2010 against 21,21,345 in 2009 recording an increase of 4.9 per cent in 2010.
The IPC crimes(in 2010) reported a higher growth rate of 25.6 per cent as compared to the fast pace of population growth of 18.3 per cent in the decade, the report said.
Meanwhile, a total of 1,422 kidnapping or abduction of women have taken place in Delhi last year, which is 37.7 per cent of the total cases in 35 major cities. There were 112 dowry deaths and 1,273 incidents of cruelty by husband or relatives in the national capital last year, said the NCRB report. Last year, Mumbai recorded 146 incidents of kidnapping of women, 21 dowry deaths and 312 incidents of cruelty by husband or relatives. Among states, out of total of 8,391 dowry death cases in the country, Uttar Pradesh has reported 2,217 cases of dowry death followed by Bihar having 1,257 cases.
Incidents of cruelty by husband and relatives total up to 94,041 cases marking an increase of 5. per cent over 2009 and 105.4 per cent over the average of last 5 years (2005 - 2009). Nineteen per cent of such crimes reported in the country were reported from West Bengal (17,796) alone. Tripura has reported the highest crime rate at 26.0 as compared to national average.
