There has been a rise in the deaths caused due to Adverse Events Following Immunisation in the last two years, with 138 deaths reported during 2010.
Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Sudip Bandhopadhyay informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question in this regard that there were 116 deaths due to Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFI) in 2009 and 111 in 2008.
The Minister also informed the House that "the increase in such deaths in unrelated to closure of public sector undertakings involved in the production of vaccines, and is due to strengthening of AEFI reporting system, publication and dissemination of revised guidelines, training of personnel and increased sensitisation".
He also said that the suspension of licences of PSUs to manufacture vaccines has been revoked, thus paving the way for their participation in vaccine production.
