Daughter of K’taka MLA, 17, hangs self
A 17-year-old daughter of Bommanahalli constituency’s BJP MLA M. Sathish Reddy hanged herself at their residence in Hongasandra on Begur Road on Thursday night. The girl was upset after being reprimanded by her mother over a trivial matter.
The deceased, Gagana, was the eldest daughter of Mr Reddy and his wife Asha. The couple also have two other children, Meghana, a Class 6 student, and four-year-old Nishanth. Gagana was a first PU student at Christ College.
The police said that Gagana was quarrelling with Meghana over watching TV on Thursday night around 8.30. Seeing them quarrelling, their mother scolded Gagana and went to the ground floor along with Meghana. After a while, around 9.15 pm, Asha called Gagana to have dinner, but she did not come down. Asha went to Gagana’s room on the first floor and found the door locked from inside. She called her and knocked on the door, but there was no response.
“Suspecting that something had gone wrong, she informed Mr Reddy and others who were at home. Mr Reddy and others broke open the door to find Gagana hanging from the ceiling fan. She had used a saree to hang herself. They brought her down immediately and as she was still breathing, they rushed her to a nearby private hospital. There she was given treatment and was kept under observation. But she died around 10.30 pm,” the police explained.
“Mr Reddy requested us to complete the formalities and give the body by early morning. The body was shifted to Victoria Hospital mortuary, where the post-mortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the family members around 3.30 am on Friday. She was cremated at Mr Reddy’s farmhouse in Hongasandra around 7 am,” the police said.
“He said that a large number of people would gather at his home as it was Id on Friday. So, he decided to conduct the last rites before people gathered in large numbers,” a source said.
A person close to Reddy family, on condition of anonymity, said that Mr Reddy married his niece (elder sister’s daughter). “The couple had no children in the first couple of years of their wedding. Gagana was their first child and they were very excited when she was born. Mr Reddy, especially, was very fond of Gagana. Now, with her untimely death, he is very depressed and not talking to anyone.”
