CWC concerned over Valley
The CWC, the highest decision-making body of the party, on Monday expressed concern over the current situation in the Kashmir Valley where “some elements are misguiding youths”.
The meeting, which was called to finalise a schedule for the Congress president’s election, discussed the situation in the Valley. Home minister P. Chidambaram was specially called to brief the CWC about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir where the party is sharing power with the National Conference in the Omar Abdullah government.
Besides Mr Chidambaram, Union ministers Ghulam Nabi Azad and Ambika Soni and R.K. Dhawan were said to spoke on it.
According to sources, Mr Azad, the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, drew attention to how young generation is backing a demand of azadi. Ms Soni, who was earlier AICC in-charge of the state, also took part in the deliberation.
Mr Chidambaram said for the first time women in the Valley were coming on the streets to which Mr Azad said this was not new. He apprised the meeting about progress in the relief and rehabilitation works in Leh.
Mr G. Venkataswamy tried to raise the separate Telangana issue but others told him that the CWC was discussing the Kashmir issue, sources said.
The CWC called for a “balanced” approach of dialogue and action and expressed concern over the recent spate of violence in the Valley. The concern of the Congress leadership over the situation could be gauged from the fact that Mr Chidambaram was specially called to the meeting despite not being a CWC member. Mr Chidambaram is understood to have told the meeting that the situation in the Valley is “worrisome”.
