CVC: Speed up overseas probe in spectrum case
In a bid to tie-up loose ends in the ongoing multi-agency probe into the 2G spectrum scam the Central Vigilance Commission has asked various agencies to expedite their overseas investigations in the case.
Highly-placed government sources said while the CVC has expressed satisfaction over the investigations conducted so far it wants that agencies like the CBI, Enforcement Directo-rate and the Financial Intelligence Unit should wind up investigations being conducted in foreign countries at the earliest.
The CBI, ED and FIU, sources added, in their presentation to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) had also mentioned that “overseas link” of the 2G probe is an important aspect of the investigations and they were in constant touch with agencies abroad to try and expedite the matter.
Most of the investigations being conducted abroad are linked to the money trail into the `1.75 lakhs spectrum allocation scam. In the last few days the CVC has held meetings with officials of investigating agencies at various levels to exactly ascertain what still remains to be probed.
“During our interaction we realised that the money trail being traced to several foreign countries was the weak link in the chain of investigations. So this needs to be expedited. The fact that so may people are behind bars goes on to prove that the CBI has done its job well,” a senior Commission official said.
The Supreme Court in February this year had asked the CVC to assist the court with the 2G case.
The Supreme Court had directed all investigating agencies to submit their status report.
