Curfew after 4 killed in police firing, clashes
Curfew was imposed in trouble-torn areas of Assam’s Goalpara district after the death of at least four persons in police firing and clashes on Monday.
The problem started with the recovery of a body from Rakshasini area of Goalpara. The victim, Taher Ali, was missing since Sunday. IGP (law and order) S.N. Singh told this newspaper that curfew had been clamped in the trouble-torn areas and the situation was under control.
“The police went to recover the body of a victim who was reported missing since Sunday. The mob which had gathered near the place where the body was buried suddenly turned violent and starting pelting stones at the police,” he said. In self-defence, the police opened fire, in which at least two protesters died on the spot and at least six others got bullet injuries. Seven policemen were also injured in the stone-pelting, which also damaged some police vehicles.
The angry mob also lynched a youth on a motorcycle who was passing by that area, and set his motorbike on fire. Mr Singh said the police was trying to identify the youth who was lynched. He added that extra companies of security forces were rushed to the district to defuse tensions.
It is significant that violence had rocked the district in February too, when panchayat polls were held in the district.

China puts up 5th tent in Ladakh

Chinese troops have put up a fifth tent in the Daulat Oldi Beg area of eastern Ladakh, 19 km into Indian territory, but it’s unclear when it was pitched. Initial information with New Delhi suggests the Chinese may have put up four tents. “The fifth tent could have come up a few days ago as part of the Chinese tented post,” sources said.
The Indian security forces are learnt to have pitched eight to nine tents opposite the Chinese tents.
