Curb powers of EC, raise poll expenses ceiling: Panel
The parliamentary standing committee on law and justice has recommended statutory backup to the Model Code of Conduct and sought to take away some powers vested in the Election Commission like derecognising a political party.
The panel also suggested the model code be enforced from the date of notification and not from the date of announcement of polls.
The committee sought revision in a candidate’s election expenditure limit to make it more realistic, and suggested setting up of fast-track courts for poll disputes.
“The committee strongly feels it is expedient to enact a law to give statutory backup to the MCC, leaving no vacuum for the EC to exercise its powers,” its chairman Shantaram Naik said.
