Cheats use ‘arrest’ threat to dupe victims over phone

U. Sudhakar Reddy | DC
Hyderabad: A new modus operandi for cheating the gullible public has emerged. In this method, the cheats attempt to loot money from victims by instilling the fear of arrest in them.
These conmen make phone calls to selected targets and say that a non-bailable warrant (NBW) has been issued against them. The unsuspecting targets are further told that the warrant was issued in a bank loan case and ask the victims to hire a lawyer, otherwise a police team will arrest them immediately.
The Cyber Crime police has been receiving several of such complaints in the past few days. Cyber Crime police station officials said,“The caller either claims that he is from a law firm or from the police department.
These callers say that the person being called had taken a loan from the bank and failed to repay it, due to which the bank has approached the court. They also claim that the court has issued an NBW and a police team has been dispatched to arrest them in the next few hours.
The caller then offers a lawyer’s service and claims that he will help in recalling the NBW. He asks the victim to deposit money in a bank account. We are pursuing certain complaints of this nature.”
Naga Lakshmi of Medchal said,“I had received a call stating that I had defaulted on a bank loan and I needed to pay money, otherwise I would get arrested. They also told me that someone may have used my photographs and details to secure a bank loan. They asked me to deposit rs 10,000 to avert any danger. I did it. But later ,when I checked with the bank, I found that no case was booked against me.”
