Hyderabad: Confusion prevailed on Saturday when a woman alleged that the body of her husband, who she says was an employee of City Light Hotel, was mistakenly handed over to another family.
Meera, wife of 40-year-old K. Ashok, from Warasiguda who died in the mishap, said that his body was sent to Bonakal mandal in Khammam district. She claimed that she had to take the help of an NGO to identify the body.
However, the Mahankali police said that Ashok was still missing and the body that was sent to Khammam was that of the hotel cook, Venkatesh. “His family members had identified the body and completed the official formalities before taking it,” Mahankali sub-inspector Durga Rao said.
Meera, who has been visiting the mortuary and police station for the last five days, said that she was not shown the body at the mortuary.
“I went to the Satyaharishchandra Foundation, where I got the photographs of all the deceased, and I found my husband’s body among them. I knew it from the red shirt he was wearing that day,” she said. However, according to the police, Meera’s husband was not employed with the hotel.
“We verified it with the injured people at the hotel and the management. None of them knew Ashok,” Mahankali detective inspector Srinivas said. Meera says that Ashok went missing on Sunday night after he went to City Light Hotel.

Chennai: The job racket wing of the central crime branch (CCB) police here on Saturday busted an international racket with the arrest of a 41-year-old woman and her husband who allegedly collected Rs 34 lakh from job-seekers after promising them employment opportunities in Canada.
Four aspirants who had left the country with bag and baggage realised half-way through, when they reached Ghana in west Africa, that they had been duped.
Based on the direction of city police commissioner S. George, the police arrested prime accused Hema alias Hema Latha, 41, and her husband Narayanan, 52, of Gandhi Nagar, West Mambalam, under section 420 of the IPC and 24 of the Emigration Act 1983.
Hema and Narayanan floated 20th Century Consultant, a manpower agency, in 1997, without obtaining necessary permission from the Protector of Emigrants. Initially, they offered employment opportunities to job-seekers in various companies, including Khaitan and Godrej, in Chennai. Later, with the help of Vairavan of Singapore, they secured employment opportunities for a few youths in Singapore.
They decided to expand the network and took the help of brokers, including Muthusaravanan of Chennai and Ravandeep of Chandigarh. Taking the assistance of Ravandeep, the couple sent Asokhpandiyan and three others to Canada through Malaysia.
From Malaysia, the job-seekers proceeded to Benin, a West African country. The local agent collected money from them and issued Canadian work permits. They were moved to Accra city in Ghana, another West African country. After accommodating them in a hotel and collecting their passports, the local agent disappeared.
Shocked over the fraud, the four approached the Indian high commission in Ghana. The officials sifted through the papers and found that the work permits were fake. They helped arrange their return to India.
It has come to light that the couple had also cheated Amirthavalli, a differently-abled woman, assuring a job to her daughter and son-in-law in Canada. Muthusaravanan conducted the interview for the job over phone. The duo duped her after collecting money.
The police have urged people seeking employment opportunities abroad to visit website www.poechennai.in and collect details regarding manpower agencies registered with the Protector of Emigrants, Ashok Nagar, Chennai.

Bazzu confessed that his father is an accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and he himself had 16 criminal cases registered against him in various police stations in the city, said an officer at Mulund police station.

Man jailed for 10 yrs for raping minor in farmhouse
New Delhi: A Delhi court has sentenced a man to 10 years in jail for raping a minor when she was alone at a farmhouse here. Additional sessions judge Virender Bhat convicted Uttar Pradesh resident Nand Kumar and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him, saying he made the 16-year-old victim a soft target for satisfying his lust.
"It is apparent from the record that the convict found the prosecutrix alone in her room on the day of incident and made her a soft target for satisfying his sexual lust. "The victim pleaded for mercy but the convict did not pay heed to her entreaties and continued with his sinister act.
At that time, the convict did not realise even for a second that he himself is a father of four daughters and the victim aged 16 years, at that time, was also like his daughter," the judge said. According to the prosecution, 52-year-old Kumar had raped the victim in February last year when she was alone in a room of the farmhouse, where she was residing with her family.
The victim's father, who was working as a gardener at the farmhouse, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that Kumar, who was working in a neighbouring farmhouse, came to his daughter's room when he and his wife were away for some work and raped her.
The counsel for accused pleaded the judge to take lenient view against Kumar, saying he is the only bread winner in his family and if sent to jail, his family would starve to death. The judge observed that the convict was not in an "inebriated condition at the time of commission of offence and thus evidently his act was well deliberated upon".
The court also said the crime committed by the convict was intensely grave and serious in nature.
