Crime file: OU assistant prof. held for sex abuse
Hyderabad: An assistant professor of Osmania University has landed in jail after investigations showed that he had sexually abused and harassed 14 PhD women scholars on campus. Osmania University sacked N. Shiv Shankar, assistant professor with the OU chemical engineering wing. He was working on contract for two years.
Police said that in the complaint filed a month ago, the 14 students stated that Shankar used to take women students to secluded classrooms and sexually abuse them. If any student protested, he would abuse them in vulgar language. Following the complaint, Shankar was arrested a month ago but secured bail.
CCS inspector M. Shankar said, “After the victims filed a complaint against Shiva Shankar, he threaten to kill them if they did not withdraw it. He also harassed them to testify that he was innocent.”The inspector said that Shankar cheated a senior PhD student after promising to marry her.
Following a second complaint on June 26 at CCS, he was arrested on June 27 and sent to remand. Cases under Section 354 (assault or criminal force with intent to outrage woman’s modesty) have been booked. “We are all surprised. Nothing of this sort has been reported to the university,” an official said.

Hyderabad: Sunkari Sai Chanran Teja, who tried to extort money from Delhi-resident N. Subramanyan, three of whose family members are missing in the Uttarakhand floods, had zeroed in on the latter after seeing his appeal published in Telugu newspapers seeking information on his family members who were missing while on the Char Dham yatra, according to B. Limba Reddy, Task Force additional DCP.
Police said that Teja needed money to sustain his lifestyle which included holding parties and had run up debts of `33,000. Teja asked his friend in Delhi for money, and travelled to the capital. However, his friend turned him down. He went to the AP Bhavan, New Delhi, where he saw the advertisements about missing persons, and decided to target Subramanyan.

Tech student killed in truck-bike crash
Hyderabad: An 18-year-old engineering student was killed in a road accident on Tuesday morning after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck in Rajendranagar.
The victim, Mir Jawad Ali, suffered grievous injuries and died on the way to hospital. Jawad, a student of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology, was on an early morning ride with his cousins.

Cops crack twin blasts case
Hyderabad: State police claimed on Tuesday that it had achieved a breakthrough in the Dilsukhnagar twin blasts case.
Director-general of police V. Dinesh Reddy, said, “We know the persons who have done it. We are on the job of apprehending them. We have made a breakthrough. In the interests of the case, I will not reveal more details.” He added that the NIA also had the information.
The police said that CCTV footage had clearly revealed the facial features of one of the men who planted the bomb on a bicycle at Dilsukhnagar. Sources said that the suspect who can be seen clearly could be an Indian Mujahideen operative of the old module, and was named Tabrez alias Asadullah Akthar. Tabrez is also suspected to be involved in the Mumbai and Pune bicycle blasts.Meanwhile, state police received an alert that terrorists may infiltrate through the sea route and attack.
Additional DG V.S.K. Kaumudi said, “Coastal security is a priority as there could be infiltration through the sea route. Around 21 coastal security police stations have been operationalised with 18 fast interceptor boats and were are monitoring fishing boats. As many as 148 coastal security police home guards have been recruited exclusively.”

Guntur: Police produced the three Class X students of the Municipal Corporation High School before the Vijayawada court on Tuesday, which sent them to juvenile homes.
The three students are accused of misbehaving with a girl of their school and urinating in her drinking water bottle, from which she drank and vomited. Based on a complaint lodged by principal the cops arrested the boys. Municipal corporation officials have given the boys TCs.

Hyderabad: Three members of a family from the city, including one child, were killed in a road accident near Choutuppal in Nalgonda on Tuesday, while another suffered grievous injuries after their car rammed into a stationary truck on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada national highway. The family was being driven to a medical college in Nalgonda for the admission of their 18-year-old daughter. Their driver was also killed in the accident.
The family, which included Pooja Gupta, 18, her brother Kiran Gupta, 12, their mother Sarita Gupta, 40, and their aunt, Ritu Gupta, 30, were travelling to Narkatpally in Nalgonda for Pooja’s admission into the Kamineni Institute of Medical Sciences there. Her admission into the college was recently confirmed and they were going to complete the formalities and submit some documents.
The car was being driven by driver P. Srinivas Rao, 50. Local police said that they were travelling on the Hyderabad-Vijayawada NH 65 when their speeding car rammed into a parked truck, killing the four on the spot.
Sarita suffered major injuries in the accident. The accident occurred at around 3 pm on Tuesday. Police said “It seems the driver was at fault, but we are investigating,” Choutuppal circle inspector Jagannath Reddy said.
