Hyderabad: A mobile store owner was arrested by the sleuths of the Task Force team, East Zone, for selling porn to his customers.  He would download obscene content, like nude pictures of men and women, and videos of men and women indulging in sexual activities, from his computer and transfer them to mobile phone memory chips of the customers om payment of Rs 100 to Rs 200.

Theatre, Gaddiannaram road, Saidabad, is a resident of Chaitanyapuri, Kothapet, Hyderabad. According to B. Limba Reddy, additional DCP, task force, his team, acting on a tipoff, raided the shop and found that he was selling the porn content to his customers.
 
He was taken into custody and during interrogation, he revealed that he was running the shop for nine months and during that time, he was downloading the porn content through his personal computer and saving the files in his system and on a hard disc as well.
 
“If any customer approached him for some obscene content, he’d collect about Rs 100-200 from each person and transfer the content to their mobile phones.” Limba said.
 
The cops seized a CPU, a monitor, a hard disc, keyboard and mouse, two card readers, and one memory card from him. The accused along with the seized material was handed over to the inspector of police, Saidabad for further action.

Hyderabad: The Task Force sleuths of the city police on Saturday arrested a drug peddler near Durdana Cafe, Kandikal Gate in Chatrinaka with a pouch of brown sugar, a contraband narcotic drug. 
The accused is a native of Bihar and acquired the banned narcotic substance from a supplier in New Delhi. Mohd, Siraj alias Phool, 35, moved to the city four years ago and is a resident of Qutubullahpur. He is currently working with a private firm. 
 
According to B. Limba Reddy, additional DCP, Task Force, the accused came to know that there was a huge demand for brown sugar in the state as many were addicted to it.  “He knew that the drug was in demand among youngsters. He started selling it at higher prices,” inspector K.V. Surya Prakash Rao said.

Hyderabad: Instances of suspicious messages informing of jackpots hits and asking for bank details have been on the increase of late. Several persons have reported  such messages, some even originating in other countries. Several recent studies have found that the Android  system is high on malware and a  quarter of the malicious apps created for Android phones are to steal private data from  phone contacts. Stolen contacts are sold online which are then used for cyber crime.
 
Hundreds of malicious applications for smart phones are designed to siphon private data. A recent study by application analysis firm Appthority found that 95 per cent of all free applications had at least one risky behaviour.
 
The study said that about “51 per cent of all free Android apps read address book while 48 per cent of corresponding iOS apps read address book.” Nearly 78 per cent of the top 100 free apps were designed to leak data from a smart phone.
 
Several people have complained of malicious messages. “I get this messages regularly with the jackpot amount in some hundreds of thousands of pounds,” said A. Arvind, a techie. S. Nikita, a research graduate, said, “I get international calls informing about some prize money and asking for personal bank details.”
 
How criminals find contact details can be attributed to the malware available for Android and other smart phones. Cops deny receiving any complaints of personal data theft. “But mobile phone 
 users wouldn’t know, and if they did, it is difficult to investigate such cases,” said a city police official.

Hyderabad: Sleuths of the Central Crime Station arrested a five-member gang which was involved in robbing Rs 66 lakh. The robbery took place in broad daylight around 10 days ago at Banjara Hills. The gang attacked a man with weapons and escaped with the huge sum. The cops recovered about Rs 40 lakh from the gang. Surprisingly, the key conspirator is a kin of the victim.
 
The arrested men are Mohd. Altaf Aghadi, 30, Syed Amjad, 30, Mohd. Salar, 30, an autoricksahw driver, Mohd. Majid, 19, a carpenter and Mohd. Imran, 18, a painter. The prime accused Altaf Aghadi is a salesman at Faizul Communications, a  mobile phone shop  on S.D. Road, Secunderabad.  All of them are residents of Aghapura, Nampally, in Hyderabad.
 
Altaf Aghadi is a relative of Mohd. Ibrahim, the victim. Police said he turned to crime as his earnings were not sufficient. He had also tried his luck in cricket betting by taking loans but suffered losses. The desire for easy money made him hatch a plan to rob Ibrahim, who is a cashier at a textile store on Dewan Devdi. Altaf who knew that Ibrahim frequently deposited huge amounts of 
cash hatched the plan with the others by promising them huge cuts. 
 
On the morning of August 2, after a thorough recee, he followed Ibrahim in an Innova after changing its number plates. Ibrahim who was carrying Rs 66 lakh with him in his scooter proceeded towards the SBI branch in Banjara Hills. When he reached Road no. 5, the gang attacked him with iron rods. 
 
DCP L.K.V. Ranga Rao said that Amjad drove the car. Parvez and Salar hit him with rods on the head, while Majid and Imran held the victim. Imran fell on the spot injured and the gang escaped with the cash.

Two engineering students held for kidnap of college agent 
Chennai: The city police on Saturday nabbed the gang behind the abduction of north Indian student Pankaj Kumar and rescued him. The gang, which included two engineering students, was held near Kottivakkam on Saturday morning.
 
Pankaj Kumar Vihari, a former student of a private university on OMR and now working as an admission agent for bringing in north Indian students, was abducted on Thursday by an unidentified gang.
 
On a tip-off, the city police on Saturday morning held a gang of north Indians creating a nuisance on East Coast Road near Kottivakkam. When the gang subsequently tried to escape, they were caught at a check-post. On investigation, it was found that that was the gang behind the abduction of Pankaj Kumar.
 
The police rescued Pankaj Kumar who was kept in the car and arrested six persons. The accused were identified as Abhijit Singh, Mayuresh Kumar, Avinash Kumar, Santhan Kumar, Uday Kumar and Shiv Shankar Khushala from the states of Bihar and Jharkhand.
 
A release by the police said the main accused, Abhijit Singh, was a dropout from another private university near Chengalpattu and the gang had decided to extort money from Pankaj Kumar after a deal went wrong. They had initially locked him up at a room in Chengalpattu and demanded Rs 6 lakh from him.
 
The police recovered a car, jewellery, gadgets and some weapons from the accused and have registered a case.

Chennai: An unidentified man tried to rob cash from an ATM in Mogappair on Friday. Having failed in the bid, he escaped from the unmanned ATM in Rangasamy street, Golden George nagar, on Friday night.
 
After gaining entry into the kiosk, the man attempted to break the machine and rob its cash. As he failed in his attempt, he fled. On information, Canara Bank officials rushed to the spot and alerted J.J. nagar police on Saturday.
 
A police team, led by inspector Balasubramanian, conducted preliminary investigations. They are checking out the  CCTV images.

Chennai: The police on Saturday arrested four persons in connection with the recent kidnap of an LKG student. One more accused is still on the run and he would be held soon, said Mr K. Shankar, joint commissioner of police (east).
 
Four-year-old Surya was kidnapped by unknown persons from his school in R.A. Puram on Thursday morning and was rescued in the evening. The police, who initially maintained that no ransom was paid in the rescue of the child, on 
 
Saturday admitted that the boy’s father, Hariharan, paid a ransom of close to Rs 2 lakh in the form of jewellery. Investigations revealed that the person behind the operation was one of the boy’s cab drivers, Prabhu. After zeroing in on the suspects with the help of CCTV footage from the school, the police arrested four persons: Prabhu, Chandru, Subash and Chandru.
 
They also recovered cash worth Rs 2 lakh and two bikes used in the kidnap. The other accused, Kathiravan, who reportedly drove the kid on the day of the kidnap, is still on the run. The police said
 
Kathiravan, a native of Salem, has criminal cases pending against him. The police have blamed the school authorities for allowing the kid to go with a stranger and said the institution lacked foolproof security system. “It is the responsibility of the school to check the antece­dents of the van owners and drivers,” said Shankar.
He asked schools to ensure that CCTV cameras were installed on their campus, as advised by the police.
 
K.R. Nandakumar, secretary of the Tamil Nadu nursery, primary, matriculation and higher secondary schools association, pointed out that about 1,000 matriculation schools had already installed CCTV cameras.

Bengaluru: The busy Mysore Road witnessed a daylight murder on Saturday with a group of 8-10 youth hacking a rowdy to death in front of hundreds of onlookers and motorists.  
 
Deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Girish alias Circle Giri, a rowdy sheeter in KG nagar and Chamar­ajpet police stations,. Girish was on his way back from Kengeri Sat­el­lite Town to Chamrajpet in his car with his driver Soppu. Around 4.30 pm as the car reached Kengeri, eight to ten youth, who were on motorbikes, stop­ped the car and attacked Girish with lethal weapons. 
 
Girish tried to run away, but the gang chased him and killed him as hundreds of passersby looked on. The police said Girish was murdered in retaliation for the killing of another rowdy Padeyappa in 2008. Girish was one of the accused in the murder case. 
 
“Chandru alias Chandra­shekhar alias Pengu, an associate of Padeyappa, wanted to avenge the murder of his mentor. He befriended Girish, learnt his daily routine and attacked him on Saturday. Two of the murder accused surrendered at Chamarajpet police station, while two others at Kengeri police station,” a police officer said.
 
“We are investigating the financial dispute angle too,” said another officer.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court upheld a lower court order sentencing a man to a life term for sexually assaulting his daughter. The convict, 40-year-old R. Ranganatha of Shimoga district, had raped his daughter while she was still 14 years old.
 
A division bench, comprising Justices K. Sreedhar Rao and B.V. Pinto, passed an order confirming the lower court verdict against Ranganatha. But the convict had approached the high court, praying to set aside the lower court order. Referring to the opinion of a doctor that there was no recent history of sexual assault on the victim at the time of registering the complaint, Ranganatha argued that he should be acquitted as the charges against him were false. 
 
The victim had complained that she was sexually assaulted by her father and based on her statement, the case had been registered. She told the police that her father, a gas factory employee, raped her after her mother’s death. “He would come home drunk and misbehave with me. If I objected, he would attack me. Around eight months prior to the date of complaint, he sexually assaulted me repeatedly,” the victim said in her complaint. 
 
During the trial, the victim’s grandmother too corroborated the fact that the victim was with Ranganatha after her mother’s death. The doctor who examined the victim reported that the girl had not attained puberty and that she had been sexually assaulted.
 
The high court judges in the order, said, “We have carefully gone through the evidence on record, more particularly the evidence of the victim and the evidence of the doctors. It is clearly established that the victim was subjected to sexual intercourse…  The age of the victim is less than 16 years. Therefore, the question of consent or otherwise does not arise. In that view, the Sessions Judge has rightly convicted the accused for the offence of rape.”

Bengaluru: A 60-year-old man was robbed of Rs 2 lakh cash at the Nelamangala branch of Canara Bank on Saturday afternoon. The victim, Veerappa, had gone to the bank in Arishinakunte. After withdrawing the money, he was sitting on a chair waiting for someone to pick him up when a youngster came in and started chatting with him. Within seconds, the youngster snatched the elderly man's bag, which contained the cash, and fled the spot. 
 
Veerappa shouted for help, but with very few customers at the branch, no one gave the thief a chase. Though the bank is in a crowded area, he managed to escape, the Nelamangala police said.
This is the third robbery on the bank premises over the last few months. But still, the bank had not hired a security guard, the police said.

Fourth ATM theft attempt in a week
Bengaluru: In the fourth such incident in the last one week, a gang of miscreants tried to haul away an ATM in Vijaya Bank Layout in Hulimavu police limits on Friday night. The incident took place after midnight outside a mall, where three ATMs are located next to each other. The police said the accused cut the CCTV camera wires from outside and tried to shift one of the machines of ICICI bank into a waiting SUV.
 
Hearing the commotion, employees from a nearby Bescom office ran outside and saw the thieves trying to take away the ATM. They gave a chase, but the thieves managed to escape.
 
The Hulimavu police, who have registered a case, said that none of the three ATMs have security guards. The miscreants have observed this before trying to steal the ATM.
 
This is the fourth such incident in the last one week. Similar attempts were made at Axis Bank ATM in Peenya Industrial Area II phase, IndusInd Bank ATM on Double Road and Union Bank ATM on Begur Road.

Two women commit suicide
Bengaluru: Two cases of suicide were reported in the city on Friday night. In the first case, Eshwari (25), who worked at a multinational IT company in the city, hanged herself at her paying guest accommodation on Palace Guttahalli main road in Vyalikaval police limits on Friday evening. An MCA graduate, she was a native of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.
 
She did not step out of her room on Friday. Assuming that she might be taking rest as it was a holiday, the other occupants did not try meeting her. Later in the evening, one of the occupants in her PG went to Eshwari's room and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.
 
The PG owner reported the incident to the police who informed her family members. The reason for her suicide is yet to be ascertained. The Vyalikavala police have registered a case and are investigating.
 
In the second incident, Radha (26) killed herself over an alleged family dispute. On Friday night, Radha reportedly returned home from work and went straight to her room without talking to any of her family members. Next morning, when her father knocked on the door, there was no response. He broke open the door to find her hanging.
 
Radha was a resident of Kaggadasapura and worked as an accountant at a car showroom in Koramangala. The Byappanahalli police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating.
