Man held for raping 17-yr-old
Koppal: The Alavandi police on Thursday arrested a person for raping a 17-year-old girl at Belur village in the taluk. The arrested is Devendrappa Telagade, a construction labourer and native of Kavalur village. He had settled in Belur for the past one year.
The accused entered the house of Geetha when she was alone on July 3 and raped her. A case has been registered with Alavandi police.

Engineering student commits suicide
Bengaluru: Depressed over her parents’ desire to get her married, a 22-year-old engineering student committed suicide by consuming poison at her residence in Chandra Layout police limits on Wednesday night.  The deceased is Bharati, daughter of a builder, Gopal Reddy. The family are residents of Nanjarasappa layout in Chandra Layout’s Canara Bank colony.
Police suspect that Bharati took the extreme step on Wednesday night, after 11:30 pm. When her parents repeatedly tried waking her up around 5:30 am on Thursday, they received no response. Breaking the door down, they found their daughter lying dead on the floor, having consumed a bottle of pesticide.
Bharati was a final-year student at Don Bosco Engineering College on Mysore Road. She was to graduate in another month, and her parents had told her that they were planning to get her married. However, Bharati objected to this as she reportedly wanted to continue studying.
Her father was supposedly not keen on her pursuing higher studies, and insisted that she get married. Harried by this, she decided to end her life. Police also found a suicide note addressed to her father with the words “I’m sorry” in it. Chandra Layout police have registered a case of unnatural death.

Runaway robbers killed in mishap
Chennai: Two men were killed and another injured in a road mishap while fleeing after robbing a scrap merchant during the early hours of Thursday. Police brushed aside rumours that the accident was caused when the police were chasing the robbers. The deceased were identified as Dinesh, 23 and Vasu, 24. The third man, Manoj, 23 is seriously injured.
The three were riding triples on a motorcycle when the mishap occurred on Porur-Madhuravoyil bridge in Bengaluru Highway. Dinesh who was riding the bike while going down the bridge towards Madhavaram lost control  and crashed into the railing and fell on to the service lane, nearly 70 ft below at around 3.45 am and died on the spot.
Other two pillion riders fell on the bridge and were grievously injured.  Vasu who was shifted to a private hospital died in the evening. The three attempted to sell copper cables at a scrap shop run by Senthil in the service road at Kallikuppam near Ambattur around 3.15 am.
When Senthil failed show any interest, the trio assaulted Senthil and took away Rs 1,500 cash and a mobile phone from him before escaping on the bike.

Chennai, July 4: The second wife of a railway contractor who had committed suicide because of mounting debts by setting himself on fire inside his SUV in Besant Nagar a few months ba­­ck, hanged herself at  her h­ouse in Pallavaram Thu­r­sday.  The deceased, Bh­a­nu, 43 wife of Anandan Pil­lai, ha­n­ged herself when she was alone after sending her do­m­estic help to purch­ase coffee powder. Ana­ndan Pil­la­i’s first wife and family live in Tirunelveli.
According to the police, Bhanu, who was running a ladies hostel in Isha Pal­lav­ar­am, was finding it difficult handle the pressure fr­om moneylenders.“It looks li­ke all of her property were ple­d­g­ed to support her husband’s business," the police noted.

Six college students arrested
Chennai:  Six students from Presidency College were arrested for pelting stones on an MTC bus and da­maging its windshield near Thirumangalam Thursday night. Police identified the arrested students as  Sathish, Nixon, Karthik, Vignesh, Yuvaraj and Sarath Kumar of Presidency College.
Police said a group of students from Presidency college were waiting near EB office in Thirumangalam at 3.45 pm on Wednesday to attack Pachaiyappa’s College students over a previous rivalry.
As soon as the other group of students who were in MTC  (40 A) bus got down stone pelting and exchange of blows started. A woman Ja­yakodi, who sustained injuries on her head, had lodged a complaint with the police. Based on the complaint the st­udents were arrested.  Her condition is said to be stable.

15-year-old crushed to death by lorry
Bengaluru: A 15-year-old boy was killed while his father escaped unhurt in a freak accident that occurred in Whitefield traffic police limits on Thursday morning. The deceased is Rohit, son of Ramesh (40), a construction labourer.
The duo were on their way to work around 7:20 am when the accident occurred. Ramesh, who was riding the two-wheeler, reportedly lost control of the bike when it went over a speed breaker in Gunjur.
The bike skidded and Ramesh’s son Rohit was thrown off the vehicle. A lorry driver who was speeding behind the duo’s vehicle could not apply the brakes in time and ran over Rohit, crushing him to death.
Ramesh and Rohit hail from Survanike near Hosur, and were employed as daily wage labourers. The boy was a fifth standard dropout who used to help his father at work, police said. The lorry driver has been arrested and a case has been lodged against him by the Whitefield traffic police.
